KiwiSaver advice NZ

KiwiSaver advice in NZ, explained

KiwiSaver advice is a personalised look at your own KiwiSaver: your provider, your fund type, how much goes in and when you will need the money. Here is a plain-English guide to what it covers, when it is worth having and how to get started.

What is KiwiSaver advice?

Most of us set up KiwiSaver once, when we started a job, and never look at it again. That works for plenty of people, but your situation changes over time, and the fund you started in might not be the one that suits you now.

KiwiSaver advice is where a licensed adviser looks at your own circumstances and talks you through your options. It is different from general information (like this page), which explains how KiwiSaver works but is not tailored to you.

What KiwiSaver advice can cover

  • Fund type: how growth, balanced and conservative funds differ, and which kind lines up with your timeframe and goals.
  • Providers: how the schemes on our panel compare, including their fees and published returns.
  • Contributions: what you, your employer and the government each put in, and how a change to your rate affects your balance over time.
  • First home: how a KiwiSaver withdrawal fits into your plans, and what to line up before you need it.
  • Retirement: planning ahead for 65, and how your fund type might change as you get closer.

Our advice covers KiwiSaver schemes only, so the focus stays on getting your KiwiSaver right.

KiwiSaver fund types at a glance

Funds are grouped by the mix of assets they hold. The names describe that mix, not how good a fund is, and the exact make-up varies between providers.

Fund typeWhat it mostly holdsThe broad trade-off
Defensive and conservativeMostly cash and bondsSmaller ups and downs, and a lower expected return over the long run
BalancedA mix of income and growth assetsA middle path between steadier and higher-growth funds
Growth and high growthMostly shares and propertyBigger swings, including real falls, with a higher expected return over the long run

When people look for KiwiSaver advice

  • A new job or a pay rise: a good moment to check your contribution rate. The minimum rose to 3.5% for both you and your employer from 1 April 2026.
  • Saving for a first home: your timeframe is shorter, which can change what you want from a fund.
  • Getting closer to 65: the date you will need the money starts to matter more.
  • A wobbly year in the markets: it is normal to wonder whether you are in the right fund.
  • Not sure who you are with: many people cannot remember which provider or fund they chose.
