What you're looking at

Every KiwiSaver provider publishes a Quarterly Fund Update disclosing each fund's 1 and 5-year returns, after fees, before tax, as at the quarter end below. That's the first block of columns in the table.

3, 5 and 10-year figures aren't part of that standard disclosure for most providers any more, so we compute them ourselves: chaining each fund's own printed annual returns (after fees and after tax at the 28% PIR, years ended 31 March) into an annualised figure. That's the second block. The two blocks sit on different bases and different reference dates on purpose. Read the methodology below before comparing them directly.

How these figures work

How the computed figures are chained
Each panel provider's Quarterly Fund Update prints its fund's own return for every year the fund has existed. We take those printed one-year returns (r₁, r₂, … rₙ) and chain them geometrically: ((1 + r₁) × (1 + r₂) × … × (1 + rₙ)) ^ (1/n) − 1. That reproduces the same kind of annualised figure a fund update itself prints for a longer period: computed by Summit Wealth from each provider's own fund update, never the provider's own published figure for that same span.
Why most funds don't show a 3 or 10-year figure
Most KiwiSaver providers' Quarterly Fund Updates only disclose 1 and 5-year returns any more: 3 and 10-year figures fell out of the standard template. Where a fund's own update prints enough years of annual returns for us to chain a 3, 5 or 10-year figure, we do; where it doesn't (a young fund, or a gap in the printed years), the cell is left blank. A blank never means zero: it means the figure genuinely isn't published, or the fund hasn't existed long enough yet.
Why the computed figures use a different tax rate and date
Each fund update's own annual-return chart is printed after fees and after tax at the highest Prescribed Investor Rate (28% PIR), for years ended 31 March, not the update's own quarter end, and not before tax like the 1 and 5-year figures above. Chaining those printed figures keeps them on the exact same basis the provider's own chart already uses, rather than mixing two different bases into one number.
The cross-check
Where we've computed a 5-year figure, it's shown directly beside the provider's own published 5-year figure: two different bases, so they won't match exactly, but a big gap is worth a second look. Every fund update also prints its own long-run average return on the same after-tax basis as the annual figures, and we check our own chained figure against that printed average before publishing it.
What's covered so far
Computed 3, 5 and 10-year figures are published for six panel providers this quarter (Booster, Generate, Kōura, Milford, NZ Funds and SuperLife), with every other fund's computed cells left blank rather than guessed. Coverage grows every quarter as more funds' own updates are added to the register.

What changed this quarter

  • 21 August 2026: Initial publication. Six panel providers (Booster, Generate, Kōura, Milford, NZ Funds and SuperLife) now carry computed 3, 5 and 10-year figures; every fund in the catalogue carries its provider-disclosed 1 and 5-year figures.
  • 21 August 2026: Closed-to-new-members funds removed from this table: 110 funds now shown (previously 113).
  • 22 October 2026: Monthly check. The figures stay as at 30 June 2026 for now, because providers have until 29 October 2026 to publish their Quarterly Fund Updates for the September quarter, and we'll add those once they're out.
