KiwiSaver contribution changes, 2026 and 2028

KiwiSaver's minimum contribution rates changed on 1 April 2026. Before that date, the minimum employee contribution and the minimum compulsory employer contribution were both 3%. From 1 April 2026, both minimums rose to 3.5% — so between employee and employer contributions, a total of 7% of gross salary at the minimum settings, up from 6%.

A further step is scheduled for 2028: both the minimum employee and employer contribution rates are set to rise again, to 4% each. Contribution rates you nominate above the legal minimum — 4%, 6%, 8% or 10% on the employee side — aren't affected by this change; the change is to the floor, not to any of the higher voluntary rates already available.

Separately from employer and employee contributions, eligible members also receive a government contribution — 25 cents for every dollar they personally contribute, up to a maximum of $260.72 a year. The government contribution isn't available to members with an annual income over $180,000; and, as with any government contribution rule, it's worth checking your own eligibility rather than assuming it applies.
